An Ideotype as defined by Answers.com is " A specimen identified as belonging to a specific taxon but collected from other than the type locality." The term "ideotype" was believed to be used first by molecular geneticists to describe the appearance, or more specifically, the desired appearance of a microbe colony or plant. Simply, ideotype means idea-type, or an idealized envisioned appearance that is desired. More recently, the term has been co-opted by plant breeders to describe the idealized appearance of a plant variety. The concept of ideotype in crop improvement was introduced by Donald. It literally means 'a form denoting an idea'. According to Donald ideotype is a biological model which is expected to perform or behave in a particular manner within a defined environment. According to him "a crop ideotype is a plant model, which is expected to yield a greater quantity or quality of grain, oil or other useful product when developed as a cultivar." Later in 1976 Donald and Hamblin proposed the concepts of isolation, competition and crop ideotypes. Market idetype, climatic ideotype, edaphic idetype, stress ideotype and disease/pest ideotypes are its other concepts. The term ideotype has following synonyms: model plant type, ideal model plant type and ideal plan type.
