In geotechnical engineering, bearing capacity is the capacity of soil to support the loads applied to the ground. The bearing capacity of soil is the maximum average contact pressure between the foundation and the soil which should not produce shear failure in the soil. Ground pressure is the pressure exerted on the ground by the tires or tracks of a motorized vehicle or the pressure exerted by lifting devices such as cranes. In construction, the GBP is a set critical limit determined for the capacity of the surrounding soil to safely bear loads for heavy lifts.
