  • Whoever provided you the definition of the word bund should read ANY worthwhile book on the Allied war effort in the China Burma India theatre. I can recommend George MacDonald Fraser's " Quartered safe out here " A bund is simply local native term for an embankment or dyke or levee.... The oldest street in Shanghai is called The Bund,because it followed the line of the river bank. Not an abbreviation for anything - far less the ridiculous " Built-up Natural Defence"
