What does Rotherham mean?
- Rotherham
- Rotherham ( (listen)) is minster and market town in South Yorkshire, England. The town takes its name from the River Rother, which is located to the south of the town centre, although the main river running through the town is the River Don. It is the main settlement of the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham. Rotherham has the unenviable reputation of being the most unhappy place in the UK, according to a recent 2022 survey. It is the second smallest metropolitan borough area in South Yorkshire, with a population only marginally larger than neighbouringBarnsley. Traditional industries included farming, glass making and flour milling. Most around the time of the industrial revolution, it was also known as a coal mining town as well as a major contributor to the steel industry. The town's historic county is Yorkshire and Rotherham formed part of the West Riding of Yorkshire until 1974. A reorganisation of local government saw the abolition of the ancient Yorkshire Ridings and the creation of South Yorkshire, comprising the metrpolitan boroughs of Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield. Rotherham had a population of 109,691 in the 2011 census. The borough, governed from the town, had a 2021 population of 265,807, the 61st most populous district in England.
