- The Wappinger were an Eastern Algonquian-speaking tribe from New York and Connecticut. They lived on the east bank of the Hudson River eastward to the Connecticut River valley.In the 17th century, they were primarily based in what is now Dutchess County, New York, and their territory included the east bank of the Hudson in what became both Putnam and Westchester counties south to Manhattan Island. To the north, the Roeliff-Jansen Kill marked the beginning of Mahican territory. The Wappinger territory extended east to the Connecticut River valley.
