Base Army Post Office

In May 1854 Edward Smith, of the Post Office Inland Letter Section, was appointed as the Army Postmaster. He left London for Constantinople in June 1854 with an Assistant Army Postmaster, Thomas Angell. On their arrival they set up the first Base Army Post Office. Today the postal service for all Military branches is the British Forces Post Office (BFPO).
