Canon Garland Memorial Medal

Canon David John Garland OBE is known as ‘the architect of ANZAC DAY’ in the book ‘ANZAC DAY ORIGINS’ co-written by John A. Moses and George F. Davis. The Canon Garland Memorial Society Inc built the ‘Canon Garland Memorial - ANZAC Day Origins’ at the Kangaroo Point Cliffs Park in Brisbane Australia and this memorial was unveiled, dedicated and gifted to the Brisbane City Council on 22 April 2016. Canon D. Garland is well regarded for his ecumenical, social, religious and his care for returned soldiers from World War 1. Canon Garland served as an Anglican priest at St Barnabas Ithaca RedHill from 1920 until his death on 9 October 1939 just after the start of what would become World War 2. The Canon Garland Memorial Medal (CGMM) is awarded to people who were associated with the realisation of the memorial. The award of a CGMM is also awarded where it will lead to Canon Garland becoming more well known for his instrumental part in formulating the way that ANZAC DAY is commemorated. Since 25 April 1916 in Brisbane Australia, ANZAC DAY is commemorated on that same day annually in Australia and around the world. Only thirty (30) Canon Garland Memorial Medals will ever be awarded by the Canon Garland Memorial Society.
