'Algem' is a two-unit lab-scale photo-bioreactor, contrived to accelerate algae research and discovery. 'Algem' enables 'algal researchers' to investigate environmental impacts on algal biology and identify optimal growth conditions for desired 'algal traits'. 'Algem' can culture micro-algae or cyano-bacteria under simulated environments, where light intensities, temperatures, daylight hours, mixing, and status can be closely controlled. Unit control is by integrated touch screen or Algem software via the USB link: With the Algem software, cell growth can be continuously monitored and data collected. Strain-specific growth data can be easily produced, and optimal growth parameters identified. Algem uses include strain development, optimization, and growth; understanding of geographic and seasonal effects; and collecting information needed to support large scale cultivation. Algem facilitates accelerated algal research and innovation.
