- Despenser is a surname, most commonly associated with Norman-English barons of the 13th- and 14th- centuries and their descendants. Hugh le Despenser (sheriff) (died 1238), High Sheriff of Berkshire Hugh Despenser (justiciar) (1223–1265), Baron le Despencer Hugh Despenser the elder (1262–1326) Hugh Despenser the younger (died 1326) Hugh le Despencer, Baron le Despencer (1338) (c. 1308 –1348/9), son of Hugh the younger Despenser, fought at the battles of Sluys and Crécy. He was created a baron by writ of summons to Parliament in 1338 (the titles of his father and grandfather having been forfeited by virtue of their treason convictions). Henry Despenser (c. 1341 – 1406), Bishop of Norwich. Thomas Despenser, Earl of Gloucester (1373–1400), who was executed after the abortive Epiphany Rising.
