What does gamelle mean?
- gamelle
- (Fr.). A wooden or earthen bowl formerly used among the French soldiers for their messes. It generally contained the quantity of food which was allotted for 3, 5, or 7 men belonging to the same room. The porridge-pots of the navy were made of wood, and held a certain allowance. During the monarchy of France, subaltern officers and volunteers were frequently punished for slight offenses by being sent to the gamelle, and excluded from their regular mess; they were put upon short allowance according to the nature of their transgression.
