What does VESDA mean in Construction?

Fire detection devices that help to protect sensitive areas, for example data centres. VESDAs can be set up to trigger say a fire suppression system using a fire retardant gas. This may be enough to extinguish any combustion in the early stage before sprinklers need to operate. This helps preserve equipment that operating sprinklers might destroy. Another example is their use in areas of a building where fire has the potential to be particularly catastrophic unless detected early, such as atriums.
