Qualitative Habitat Evaluation Index
Used extensively in water quality monitoring, involves counting numbers of different species found in an area and classifying them into 1 of 5 categories based on the organism's sensitivity to water conditions; 1 being extremely tolerant (can live in relatively polluted waters) and category 5 representing very sensitive organisms which live in great quality waters.
