What does 5S mean in Manufacturing?

A very advanced form of "good housekeeping" for factories or other workplaces, based on the five Japanese words "seiri" (Sort, or organize), "seiton" (Straighten or Store away items in an orderly way), "seisou" (Sweep, or clean), "seiketsu" (cleanliness that is Sustained), and "shitsuke" (Self-discipline to maintain order and cleanliness). These terms describe a system for organizing a workplace through application of good housekeeping principles. It yields benefits for the operation in productivity, safety, cost, and morale as well as appearance. (See also 3S and 4S.)
