The group know as ‘ Nonjudgmental Order of Really Trippy Hairstyles’ originated in Goleta California during the summer of 1972. According to The Santa Barbara INDEPRENDENT, Charles “Chuck” Taranto, Craig “The Genius” Jacks, and the elusive Bowen “Golden Voice of Rafterjumping” Reddin were sitting together on a small sofa in the spare bedroom Charles’ mother used for an in home hairdressing salon. Actually, The Genius was across the room, facing the opposite direction on his bench. Oddly, in addition to a trio of full head coverage hair dryers and the usual trays holding scissors, trimmers, brushes, hair dyes, foil strips, chemicals. and a tip jar full of twenties, the business space contained a fairly decent sounding console piano. Probably out of sheer boredom as well as the sense of disorientation brought on by the unnerving piano soundtrack being played by The Genius, the three men developed a keen interest in the parade of extremely strange hairdos leaving the salon every 45 minutes or so. None of the three had ever seen anything like the museum worthy works of weirdness walking out each day. Women of all ages would pop in looking normally normal with typical hairstyles. Those who were new to the parlor would usually stop for a second and look over at The Genius while eerie sounds slowly bounced from wall to wall and back to their brains. One time a tall lady with a ponytail and the coolest white Go-Go boots walked in, tilted her head, fell to her knees and yelled, “Are you kidding me? Those are the chords from that giant chicken/B movie ‘The Mysterious Island!” Well, as you might imagine, Chuck immediately put down his bowl of mint chip ice cream and Golden Voice slammed the rest of his drink back fast. Vodka. Or maybe it was Tequila. No, The Genius would have gone out for a smoke earlier and returned with what the true musicians called ‘STOLIMILKWN3EBPA’ or ‘Mother’s Milkvushnika’ or something. Nothing but the best. The Vhozxka of vodkas never lies and goes perfectly with any breakfast cereal, fresh juice or empty glass or not. Whatever. Yeah. Eventually the ‘Mysterious Island woman’ lifted the hair dryer and opened her eyes. She didn’t seem to care that her hair now looked like an array of aardvarks standing straight up on their noses with tails that twitched and drooped like tinsel on a frosted Christmas tree in Covina. “Righteous”, she said—really slowly and dropped sixty bucks in the tip jar. Wow! And if that wasn’t enough, Chuck’s Italian American hair Picasso Mother of all that is XtraKrazy-Art-do—times a zillion had marvelously sculpted a thick curving arrow that came right out of her temple and straightened out across her forehead like a retro neon sign for Nightparty Motel. It was too much really but there it was. Silence. That woman’s Xdo was pretty much the straw, you know? No way was anything ever going to be quite the same again. It was just, well—so trippy. Everything was. Trippy music, trippy vodka, trippy carpet, trippy tip jar, trippy transformations, and that legit, otherworldly and super trippiest of all trippy hair dos barely dragging on the cottage cheese ceiling like Zacchaeus waving from the top of that tree right before his world changed forever. Trippy was the only word that worked. It was perfect I guess. ______________ So to wrap this up, the three dudes were so moved by this call to unconditional appreciation that as soon as the backing vocals were done and The Genius confirmed the necessary maximum decibel level of what was one of the best mixes ever done on a Fostex 4 channel cassette deck, they formed the now world famous Nonjudgmental Order of Really Trippy Hairstyles, or NORTH. No big deal.
