What does AHIR mean?
- Ahir
- Ahir or Aheer is an ethnic group in India. Most members of which identify as being of the Indian Yadav community because they consider the two terms to be synonymous. The Ahirs are variously described as a caste, a clan, a community, a race and a tribe. The Yaduvanshi Ahir also spelled Yadubansis, Yadubans, Yadavanshi, Yadavamshi) claim descent from the ancient Yadava tribe of Krishna. The Yaduvanshi trace their origin to Yadu. The traditional occupation of Ahirs are pastoralism and agriculture. They are found throughout India but are particularly concentrated in the northern areas. They are known by numerous other names, including Gauli, Ghosi, Gop, Rao Saab in the north. Some in the Bundelkhand region of Uttar Pradesh are known as Dauwa or Dau Saab. In Gujarat, they are also known as Ahad and Aayar.
