What does SMU mean in Military?

The term Special Mission Unit, is sometimes used to describe designated Joint Special Operations Command units. They are tasked with "special missions", sometimes referring to unconventional warfare, counter-terrorist activities, direct action, Special reconnaissance, and/or black operations. Media have used the term when describing five military units, although they are not officially acknowledged by the US government or US military: ⁕1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta, or Delta Force ⁕Intelligence Support Activity ⁕160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment ⁕Asymmetric Warfare Group ⁕Naval Special Warfare Development Group, or SEAL Team Six ⁕24th Special Tactics Squadron Special Mission Unit can also be used to refer to other units with similar capabilities from other nations, for example the British SAS, Australian SASR and also Canadian JTF2.
