The exact meaning is: Guardian Ad Litem and you can find this in legal texts as... by and through his GAL or by and through his G.A.L. What is a Guardian ad Litem? A “guardian ad litem” (GAL) is a person the court appoints to investigate what solutions would be in the “best interests". When a person involved in a suit cannot adequately represent his or her own interests, the court may appoint a guardian ad litem to protect the person's interests. Unlike typical guardians or conservators, guardians ad litem only protect their wards' interests in a single suit. Generally, courts appoint guardians ad litem to represent legal infants and adults who are actually or allegedly incapacitated. (this text is coming from the Cornell University)
